I guess the best place to start a blog is with an introduction. So here we go…
My name is Christopher (Chris) Barnes. As I type this I’m just 3 weeks shy of turning 40 (yikes!) and am married to my wonderful husband Troy and am personally in charge of keeping our dachshund, Jarvis, entertained – my true full time job.
As I type this we currently live in Silver Spring, Maryland (more on that later) and I am ending my current job and looking for my next job.
I’m originally from Atlanta but call Houston “home”. I do own a car but I prefer mass transit and in particular am partial to airplanes and trains. I am a struggling minimalist who finds clutter distracting and unnecessary.
I did graduate high school but did not go to college, choosing instead to focus on a career and supporting myself after I had a scholarship fall through (remind me to tell that story some time).
I’ve been working in information technology for 20 years this year. I started in IT at Cox Enterprises (Cox Communications, Cox Radio, Cox Newspapers, etc) and then moved to Westwood One (Metro Networks, Shadow Traffic, etc) and most recently have been at Urban One (TV One, Radio One, Interactive One, etc) for the last 9 years.
I consider myself a natural-born troubleshooter and expert reverse-engineer-er. In a time of crisis or when you have a system down I’m the guy you want around.
As I mentioned in my first paragraph I’m married to a man – which makes me gay – or otherwise in an incredibly awkward situation. I’m also an atheist. Neither of these things will stop me from liking you no matter who you are, what you believe in, or who you happen to be sleeping with. I make no promises when it comes to jerks though…. I will not suffer a jerk.
I’m writing this blog for a few reasons – chief of which is probably the cheap therapy. You’ll probably see a few topics that are pet peeves and a few topics on tech and a few topics on how simply weird you humans are. My biggest pet peeve and frustration with humanity is people who don’t cover their mouth to sneeze or cough… so heads up on that one.
Anyway – welcome and by all means please feel free to comment on these posts. If you don’t like what I’m writing that’s fine. You don’t have to agree with everything – and if you did I’d be concerned. If you do agree with something let me know so I know I’m not alone or crazy. 😉
